'Angola 2' Leave Solitary Cells in La. After 36 Years
Two former Black Panthers imprisoned in Louisiana are out of solitary confinement for the first time since the 1970s. State corrections officials say Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox were moved into a "maximum security dormitory" earlier this week. Louisiana prison officials once said the men, known as the Angola 2, would never be moved.

The Angola 3: Ex-Black Panthers Kept in Solitary Confinement for Over Three Decades
At Angola, a sprawling complex that was once a slave plantation, solitary confinement means living in a 6-by-9 cell, 23 hours a day, seven days a week. It is an extreme punishment that is physically and psychologically dehumanizing. "The SPCA would shut this prison down if they had dogs up here like this," Herman Wallace says.

A federal trial could start this summer for three men who claim they are victims of cruel and unusual punishment because of the decades they spent in isolation cells at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, their attorney said Monday afternoon.

Citing "lost" evidence, fabricated eyewitness testimony, and the Louisiana Department of Corrections' zeal to quickly end its investigation into the 1972 murder of a prison guard at Angola, defense lawyers Monday called for the release of two men known as part of the "Angola 3."
