2010 Highlights So Far
Houston: A3 activities at an event in honor of Black Panther Carl Hampton at the University of Houston include a presentation by Robert, a screening of “In the Land of the Free” and a performance of “Angola 3,” the stage play by Poetic Panther Productions.
New York: New A3 documentary film narrated by Samuel L. Jackson “In the Land of the Free” is screened in June as a part of the Human Rights Film Festival - New York City. Robert and Director Vadim Jean speak.
Santa Barbara: New A3 documentary film narrated by Samuel L. Jackson “In the Land of the Free” is screened in February at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Robert and Director Vadim Jean speak.
Great Britain: New A3 documentary film narrated by Samuel L. Jackson “In the Land of the Free” premieres in March as a part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival - London. The film opens to a multi-city theatrical release throughout England. Robert and Director Vadim Jean tour, speaking with the film as it opens around the country.
2009 Highlights
Angola Prison, LA: On March 19th, 2009, Herman Wallace is moved from Angola to solitary in Hunt Correctional Facility in St. Gabriel, LA, still under the control of Regional Warden Burl Cain.
Hammond: A full day of A3 speakers, film, music, and spoken word at Southeastern Louisiana University in an event titled Surviving Angola: One’s Free, Why Not Three?, sponsored by the Southeastern Sociological Association. Presenters include Robert, Malik Rahim, Billy X Jenning, and Jackie Sumell. “The Angola 3 – Black Panthers and the Last Slave Plantation” documentary is screened.
New Orleans: A3 is featured in a MLK Day event at University of New Orleans entitled Community Organizing and the Law. Robert speaks along with Malik Rahim, Jackie Sumell, Orissa Arend and others as a part of two workshops held at Ashe Cultural Center over the summer: Free the Angola 3 and All Political Prisoners: Strategies, Insight, and Wisdom, and Black Panthers Speak to Post-Katrina New Orleans: Survival Programs—Past and Present. “The House that Herman Built” documentary previews as a part of the 2009 Patois Human Rights Film Festival; and "Angola 3," a new stage play by Poetic Panther Productions, premieres at Loyola University. New Orleans based actions in 2009 include an A3 Solidarity March for MLK Day, an A3 Birthday Party and Cake Contest for Albert’s 40th Birthday on February 19th, a 36-week A3 “T-Shirts on Thursdays” solidarity action, an A3 Solidarity Vigil in front of the courthouse where Albert’s 5th Circuit Appeal Hearing was held on March 3rd, and a Juneteenth A3 solidarity gathering.
New York: Rigo 23 continues his support for A3 with an installation entitled: The Deeper They Bury Me, The Louder My Voice Becomes in the New Museum in New York City from July through October.
Richmond: A screening of “Angola 3 – Black Panthers and the Last Slave Plantation” for Black History Month, sponsored by the Richmond Anarchist Black Cross.
Great Britain: “The House that Herman Built” documentary previews as a part of an A3 London Chapter and Free Zulu Committee event: An Evening of Zines and Things in London.
2008 Highlights
Angola Prison, LA: On March 24th, 2008, Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox are released into an inmate dorm 35 years, 11 months, and 7 days after they were first put in solitary confinement. Then on November 13th, after a series of legal victories in Albert's case, officials put them back in the dungeon.
Austin: Robert King speaks at the University of Texas at Austin about his struggle for justice and freedom for a wrongful conviction as well as the continuing struggles of his two innocent friends still incarcerated at Angola Prison in Louisiana.
California: Robert's 2008 Book Release Tour travels across California.
Maine: Robert joins Malik Rahim from Common Ground on this series of speaking events in Portland, Turner, and Montville, Maine.
New Orleans: Mos Def headlines at Tipitina's for a Black August political prisoner benefit honoring the Angola 3. A3 tables at Essence Music Festival and State of the Black New World. Charlotte O’Neal, a panther in exile in Tanzania, speaks about the Angola 3 at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center.
New York: Robert King discusses the use of speech under the pressure of complete isolation at an event for Creative Times held at the New Museum Theater (235 Bowery) in New York City with Rigo 23.
Oakland: Robert and other Angola 3 activists speak at Critical Resistance's 10th annual conference.
Philadelphia: Robert speaks on the Surviving Solitary panel the 2008 National STOPMAX Conference: Organizing to Abolish Solitary Confinement and Torture at US Prisons at Temple University.
San Francisco: Robert speaks at symposium with Angela Davis at San Francisco State University.
Great Britain: During the 2008 A3 UK Speaking Tour, Robert visits the unveiling of a 40 foot A3 mosaic and the opening of Herman’s House at the Royal College of Art in London. He also speaks at the 2008 ICOPA (International Conference on Penal Abolition) Conference: Creating A Scandal, Prison Abolition and the Policy Agenda at King’s College. In honor of Anita Roddick's birthday, A3 London hosted the UK's premiere performance of The People Speak by Howard Zinn with Colin Firth, followed by a screening of the highly acclaimed documentary feature film about Mumia In Prison My Whole Life and a discussion about the Angola 3.
2007 Highlights
Ithaca: Robert speaks at Cornell University.
Brazil: Robert’s 2007 Brazilian Speaking Tour – Rio, Quilombos, and other areas.
Canada: Robert speaks about the Angola 3 in Toronto.
Portugal: Robert speaks at Portuguese artist Rigo 23’s second exhibit opening in Lisbon.
2006 Highlights
California: Robert’s 2006 California Statewide Speaking Tour.
Portugal: Robert speaks at opening of the Retrospective of Rigo 23, the Portuguese muralist, who had a room in the Exhibit devoted to the Angola 3.
Venezuela: Robert accompanies leaders from Common Ground and speaks at three forums.
2005 Highlights
Austin: Robert evacuates his New Orleans home to Austin, TX. After a popular NPR story on Robert’s pralines, he begins traveling and speaking with NPR’s Kitchen Sisters.
California: Robert travels to California to work on the statue of Tommy Smith and Jon Carlos.
2004 Highlights
Bali: Robert meets with Bishop Desmond Tutu and other human rights luminaries.
2003 Highlights
California: Robert’s 2003 California Statewide Speaking Tour.
New Orleans: Robert is Critical Resistance’s 2003 Annual Conference keynote speaker.
New York: Robert’s 2003 New York Statewide Speaking Tour.
Portugal: Robert returns to Lisbon for the one year commemoration of a local organizer and community leader killed by the police and speaks with families and community groups about parallel struggles in America.
South Africa: Robert’s 2003 South African Speaking Tour - Johannesburg, Apartheid Museum, Pretoria, Durban, Westville, Natal, Cape Town, Robben Island. Robert is a guest of Mandela’s Institute for Global Dialogue where he meets with ANC leaders, the Ministers of the Labor Unions, and other officials to talk about his time in prison.
2002 Highlights
Chicago: Robert speaks at National Convention of Campaign to End the Death Penalty, meets Fred Hampton Jr., and continues on a citywide university Speaking Tour.
New Orleans: 30 Years is Enough! Local commemoration of 30 years in solitary.
Washington, DC: Robert speaks at 2002 Black Panther Reunion.
Great Britain: Robert’s 2002 UK Speaking Tour - Newcastle, Swindon, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Brighton, and Blackpool.
Portugal: Robert visits ghettos of Lisbon where immigrants from Angola, Africa are the predominant population.
2001 Highlights
Angola Prison, LA: Robert King Wilkerson, one of the Angola 3, was released on February 8th, 2001, and began touring the world detailing the injustices he suffered during his 29 years in solitary and making a plea for Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox, his two innocent friends, to be released.
Baton Rouge: Robert speaks at prison conditions protest.
California: Robert’s 2001 Northern California Speaking Tour - met with Howard Zinn, Jericho group, Critical Resistance, Prison Activist Resource Center, UC Berkeley Law School, Berkeley High School, and others.
New York: Robert speaks at Critical Resistance’s 2001 National Conference.
Shreveport: Robert speaks at Louisiana NOW Workshop and meets with state legislators about prison conditions.
Amsterdam: Robert’s 2001 Amsterdam Speaking Tour.
Belgium: Robert speaks before European Parliament.
France: Robert meets with Richard Wright’s daughter and marches with her and 15,000 others for Mumia in Paris.
